Adult Basic Education programs are designed for people to improve their reading, writing and math skills. If adults lack these basic skills, they’ll be greatly disadvantaged in the job market. Goals of a Typical Adult Basic Education Program
Adult Basic Education is often offered through a community college. The purpose of these programs is to help students on five fronts:
Prepare for and pass the General Educational Development (GED) High School Equivalency Diploma
Improve skills that will be important for securing a job
Transition into post-secondary educational programs
Provide a solid foundation for success in a future career
Develop greater self-sufficiency so adults can reach their full potential
This unique education opportunity is directed to adults who did not graduate from high school. Adult Basic Education programs also target individuals who did complete high school, but need further help advancing their basic skills so they can compete successfully in the job market. And, programs are available for adults who do not speak English as their first language.
Characteristics of a Typical Adult Basic Education Program
As part of a community college program, Adult Basic Education classes may also be offered at sites outside of the school campus. To attract students and provide greater convenience, these programs might conduct classes at locations such as community centers, churches, public schools and other easily accessible sites.
These programs are generally funded by governmental agencies and offered free of charge to students who attend. In addition, books and course materials are made available in the classroom.
To make it as easy as possible for students, classes are scheduled conveniently during the day and evening. Course instructors work with each student to identify learning goals and establish an individual plan of study. Thereafter, students work at their own pace to complete their coursework.
